河南洛陽是唐三彩的最早發現地。1905—1909年，清政府修筑隴海鐵路汴洛段時，在洛陽北邙山毀損了一批唐代墓葬，從這些的墓葬中發現了大量的唐三彩陶器。但由于古代文獻中對唐三彩記載甚少，其價值最初并未被世人所識。直至這批三彩陶器流入到北京琉璃廠古董街后，引起了王國維、羅振玉等學者和一些古董商、外國人的重視。
